Halogen Bonding: An Odd Chemistry?

نویسندگان

چکیده

Halogen bonding is a flourishing field of research, but has for long been little recognized. The same goes its scientific hero, Odd Hassel, who laid the foundations all current developments. crystallographic observation halogen−oxygen interatomic distances shorter than sum van der Waals radii involved atoms, and interpretation this phenomenon as charge-transfer interaction, have ground-breaking. Today, to polarized halogen not any longer seen “odd”, commonly referred bonding, widely exploited in chemistry. Despite recognition Hassel's work with Nobel prize 1969, surprisingly appreciation given date devoted scientist, established world-leading laboratory during one darkest eras history. Herein, we wish revive legacy highlight impact ground-breaking discoveries.

Coordination chemistry of anions through halogen-bonding interactions.

While an IUPAC definition for hydrogen bonding was only released in 2011 after decades of discussions in the scientific community (Arunann et al., 2011), it did not take such a long time to come up with an analogous definition of halogen bonding (Desiraju et al., 2013), following a revival of this interaction in the literature, which can be traced back to the early 1990s. The identification of ...

Theoretical Investigation of Halogen-Oxygen Bonding and Its Implications in Halogen Chemistry and Reactivity

Trends in the properties of normal valent and multivalent halogen-oxygen bonding are examined for the isomers of the halogen polyoxide families of the types (YXO2) and (YXO3), Y = Cl, Br, I, H, CH(3), X = Cl, Br, I. A qualitative model is formulated on the relationship between the X-O bond distance variations, the ionic character of the bonding, and the degree of halogen valence. The relative s...

Halogen Bonding in Crystal Engineering

The structural features of a molecule are determined by the covalent bonds within the molecule. Modification of the structure requires the breaking and creation of covalent bonds. Similarly, the intrinsic reactivity of a molecule arises from the covalently bonded functional groups and active sites on a molecule. Again, changing the properties requires modifications of the covalent bonds. Even i...

Halogen Bonding versus Hydrogen Bonding: A Molecular Orbital Perspective

We have carried out extensive computational analyses of the structure and bonding mechanism in trihalides DX⋅⋅⋅A(-) and the analogous hydrogen-bonded complexes DH⋅⋅⋅A(-) (D, X, A=F, Cl, Br, I) using relativistic density functional theory (DFT) at zeroth-order regular approximation ZORA-BP86/TZ2P. One purpose was to obtain a set of consistent data from which reliable trends in structure and stab...

Hydrogen bonding vs. halogen bonding: the solvent decides.

Control of intermolecular interactions is integral to harnessing self-assembly in nature. Here we demonstrate that control of the competition between hydrogen bonds and halogen bonds, the two most highly studied directional intermolecular interactions, can be exerted by choice of solvent (polarity) to direct the self-assembly of co-crystals. Competitive co-crystal formation has been investigate...
